A quick testing overview

Different situations. Different testing requirements.

FMCSA rules cover pre-employment drug testing, random testing, qualifying post-accident testing, reasonable-suspicion testing, return-to-duty testing, and follow-up testing. The applicable conditions and procedures depend on the testing reason.

A random testing program is not a fixed “every six months” test schedule for every driver. Random selections are unannounced and follow the applicable program requirements.

General reference: FMCSA testing types and requirements. A program purchase does not by itself satisfy every employer responsibility.

Who is this program information for?

Owner-operators, employers, and fleets seeking help with DOT drug and alcohol testing requirements. Whether the FMCSA rules apply depends on the driver’s covered work and applicable CDL requirements.

Must every employer use a consortium?

FMCSA explains that an employer with more than one covered CDL driver may manage its own random testing program. A consortium is a program-management option; the right arrangement depends on your operation.

Does enrollment include an individual drug test?

Program inclusions vary. Review the selected package on USDOT Service before purchasing to confirm whether an initial test, individual testing fees, training, or other services are included.

Is consortium enrollment the same as Clearinghouse registration?

No. Testing-program enrollment and Clearinghouse account responsibilities are separate items. Review which services are included and what actions the company official or driver still needs to complete.
